It makes me laugh when I think about some of the aphorisms I grew up on. Some of these turn out to be the conditioned beliefs we take into life with us without questioning them. In my lifetime, I have since had an experience with many of these – some proven true and others, far from the truth.
What do you think?
Time heals all wounds.”
“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”
“Money can’t buy happiness.”
“You can be anything you want to be if you work hard enough.”
“What goes around comes around.”
“Love conquers all.”
“You need to go to college to be successful.”
“A penny earned is a penny saved.”
“Opposites attract.”
“Family first.”
“You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.”
“Once a cheater, always a cheater.”
“The early bird catches the worm.”
“What you don’t know can’t hurt you.”
“You should never quit; winners never quit and quitters never win.”
“Hard work is always rewarded.”
“The grass is greener on the other side.”
“If you’re nice to others, they’ll be nice to you.”
“Actions speak louder than words.”
“Everything happens for a reason.”
“Ignorance is bliss.”
“Better late than never.”
“The pen is mightier than the sword.”
“Love at first sight.”
“Good things come to those who wait.”
“A leopard can’t change its spots.”
“If you build it, they will come.”
“The customer is always right.”
“It’s darkest before the dawn.”
“All’s fair in love and war.”
Just for the fun of it, choose some of these to ruminate over. Think about what they mean to you and if you want to, take it a step further and choose one or two to use as a writing prompt. Dig into yourself, flesh it out in your mind, let whatever comes up flow in to your page to illuminate your true point of view.
If nothing else, you will have practiced your writing skills while also learning about yourself.
