House, or book, same enthusiastic approaches apply. Both are a labour of love that call for creative output and commitment to bringing big dreams to life.
Both require careful planning and organization from the very beginning.
Both involve multiple stages of development, each building upon the previous one.
Both require creativity and attention to detail to achieve a satisfactory end result.
Both can be highly personal endeavours, reflecting the vision and style of the creator.
Both may require revisions and adjustments along the way to ensure quality and coherence.
Writing a book:
- Involves primarily intellectual and creative work.
- Requires a deep understanding of language, storytelling, and structure.
- Progress can be less linear, with ideas evolving and changing throughout the process.
- The final product is intangible and exists primarily in the realm of ideas.
- Collaboration may involve editors, beta readers, and agents, but the author typically retains creative control.
Building a house:
- Involves physical construction and engineering.
- Requires knowledge of architecture, construction materials, and building codes.
- Progress is often more tangible, with visible milestones like laying the foundation, framing, and finishing.
- The final product is a physical structure with functional and aesthetic components.
- Collaboration involves architects, contractors, engineers, and various tradespeople, with the owner often having less direct involvement in every aspect of the process.
Essential parts of building a book
Know your why. What’s the most important message you want to share? Think of this as the tagline for your book so when someone asks what’s your book about, you can answer the question with this why.
Know your who. Who is your ideal reader? Describe him, her or them in great deal detail. What do they care about, think about, what do they want, what do you have that they need?
Decide on your what. Create an outline. These might end up being your chapters. Under each header, in bullet point form you can add what you will address.
Whether building a house or writing a book, both of which are part construction/part creativity, when it all comes together you have a dream project fulfilled.
Whether bound by ink or mortar, there is pride to be taken in the craftsmanship of bringing your dream to life, enjoy the process, you’re doing something great.
